Being straight with you: Cozi is good, and the free tier is hard to beat

Twenty years of polish, and a free plan that covers a lot of family life:

  • A shared calendar color-coded by family member, on every phone in the house
  • Shopping and to-do lists the whole household can edit at once
  • Recipes and a meal planner
  • $0 for all of it, with paid tiers only if you want them

If what your household needs is a shared place to put things you already know about, Cozi is a good answer and you should keep it. HappyParent HQ has no grocery lists, no recipes, and no meal planner, and we are not building them.

We solve the part that comes before the calendar: the half-day field trip is in paragraph three of an email you have not opened, and nobody has typed it into anything yet.

The real difference is who does the typing

"But Cozi Max can read my emails now"

It can, and it is a real feature. On Cozi Max ($79/year) you get an inbound address, forward an email or a photo of a flyer, and Cozi turns it into a calendar event. If that is all you need, it is a fair way to spend the money.

Three things worth being precise about, because they are the difference:

  • It is one email at a time. You still have to notice the email, judge that it matters, and forward it. The 40 you never opened stay exactly where they are, which is where missed deadlines actually live.
  • It produces an event. A signed form with no date, a $12 fee, or "send in two rolls of paper towels" is not an event, so it has nowhere to land.
  • You are still the filter. Reading the inbox and deciding what counts is the job we are trying to take off you, not automate one step of.

HappyParent HQ's read-only Gmail connection means there is nothing to forward and nothing to remember. And if connecting an inbox is not for you, every account also comes with a private forwarding address, so you can work exactly the way Cozi Max does and still get the daily briefing, the per-kid sorting, and the action items.

Worth noting on price: Cozi Max is $79/year, HappyParent HQ is $79.90/year. Close to the same money for a meaningfully different job.

Every household gets a private calendar URL, plus a separate one per child if you want each kid on their own line.

In Cozi, go to Settings, Connected Calendars, "Add a calendar from a URL." Every date we pull out of your school email now shows up in Cozi, typed by nobody.

That is the honest version of the word "alternative." For some families we replace Cozi. For others we just feed it.

So which one is for you?

Stay with Cozi if

  • Your problem is coordination, not email volume. Everyone knows what is happening, they just need one place to see it.
  • You want lists, recipes, and meal planning in the same app.
  • Free matters most, and the free tier does the job.
  • Somebody in the house genuinely does not mind entering the events.

Try HappyParent HQ if

  • The email itself is the problem. School, PTA, room parent, coach, aftercare, all of it.
  • You have more than one kid across more than one platform: ClassDojo, ParentSquare, TeamSnap, Brightwheel.
  • Something has already been missed this year.

Can I use both?

Yes, and plenty of families do. Add your private HappyParent calendar link to Cozi under Settings, Connected Calendars, "Add a calendar from a URL." The dates we extract from your school email then appear on your Cozi calendar with nobody typing them.

Do I have to connect my Gmail?

No. Every account comes with a private HappyParent forwarding address. Forward your school emails to it and you get the same daily briefing, per-child sorting, and action items, without connecting an inbox at all.

What can you actually see in my inbox?

We use Google's read-only scope (gmail.readonly). We cannot send, delete, or change anything, and we never see or store your password. Data is encrypted with AES-256, we never sell it, and your mail is never used to train AI models. Details on our Security page.

Does it do meal planning and shopping lists?

No recipes, no meal planner, no grocery lists. There is a shared board with assignable to-dos, but those get pulled out of your school and activity email rather than typed in. If the meal planner is what you love about Cozi, keep Cozi and feed it our calendar link.

Our school uses ParentSquare and sports use TeamSnap. Does that work?

What if I am coming from a different app?

There is nothing to export or import either way. We rebuild your school and activity schedule from the source, which is your email. If you are leaving Maple, which closes December 31, 2026, the same applies.
